Getty Villa Museum

Sarcophagus
The earliest burial vaults were carved of marble. These were probably reserved for the ruling familes or royalty. I thought the theme of a harvest was appropriate as the fruit had matured on the vine and now the vintage was being transformed into another "life" or use.

What a wonderful metaphor for passing on to the next world:

"I thought the theme of a harvest was appropriate as the fruit had matured on the vine and now the vintage was being transformed into another 'life' or use"

I always love the pictures you share while traveling abroad to places I will probably never see.

Barbra, As you can tell I oculd have spent a couple of days studying exhibit after exhibit. We had five hours at The Villa. A wonderful docent gave us a fairly good understanding of the architecture and history but the exhibits were truly amazing. Everywhere you looked was a detail that was interesting or a reason which made survival possible in a world with little mechanization. The Getty Villa Museum and The Getty Museum are two of the most wonderful gifts that J. Paul Getty gave for everyone to enjoy. L.A. is so lucky to have both.
