J.P. Getty Museum
In ancient Rome, people incorporated marble floors to display wealth and affluence. The larger number of varieties was thought to symbolize affluence. The bottom photo is an example of an inlaid marble composed of alternating marble triangles. It is a copy of a floor from the Villa Dei Papiri which was excavated in Herculaneum.
