Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, a world renowned sculptor began this monumental project in 1948 at the invitation of Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear. Korczak died October 20, 1989 and today work on the mountain continues year around. Seven of his ten children are involved in either the carving or fund raising. The project does not receive Federal funds and is funded by admission fees or donations. A brief movie Dynamite And Dreams begins a very interesting tour and accompanied by three rooms of museum artifacts, history, and sculptures.
