Orange Cookies ..... Day One of "Twelve Days of Christmas Cookies" From Friends.

Orange Cookies
I asked twelve people to share a family favorite recipe or a traditional recipe and give a little story about the recipe. This was my first response. My cousin Susan shares her family favorite Christmas cookie recipe. It has been in the family for many years and was given to her by her paternal grandmother. It is a great tradition in Susan's family to make the cookies and decorate as a family activity.
1 cup sour milk
1/2 cup shortening
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 orange rind and juice
Beat shortening and sugar, add eggs. Sift dry ingredients and add by turns to sugar mixture with milk. Add juice of orange and grated rind.
Bake on greased cookie sheet at 350 degrees until lightly brown on edges. remove immediately and frost.
1 orange, juice and grated rind
powdered sugar to make spreadable (rather stiff)
